Surrey Masters Championships 2016

June 26, 2016 by Jim Boucher

Once again we had a great day in Surrey Sports Park for our annual Masters Championships , this year known as the “2016 Jane Asher Surrey Masters Championships.”

Jane lived up to her billing and delighted the 200-strong crowd of swimmers, officials, family and friends breaking five World Records in her four swims, breaking the 100 Free en route to her 200 Free World Mark. These will of course be subject to ratification. In addition we had an English Deaf Record for Tom Baxter in the 50m Free and Surrey’s latest additions to its “hall of fame”, Honorary Life Members Mike Hodgson and Michelle Ware were in stunning form with Mike lowering his own British Record in the 100m Breaststroke and Michelle setting a couple of Welsh Records.

The Victor Ludorum Trophies awarded for the Highest Points in 10-year age groups were closely fought and we salute those winners who had to swim so many events to come out on top. Noteworthy amongst the results was a family double for the Nash family – Keiran and Marissa – in the 18-24 group while their school swimming coach, World Ice champion Ellery McGowan, held off strong opposition to take her age group too. One of our long-standing regulars, Guildford’s Rod Campbell put in a marathon shift to take his age-group.

In the Points Trophies, an even closer outcome had been predicted than the other event earlier this week as the massed ranks of Godalming SC and Guildford City fought out a battle of titanic proportions all afternoon. Guildford’s Men took the Mens Points trophy, Godalming, expectedly, the Ladies and also the Relay Points. In one of the closest finishes of recent years, Godalming completed a glorious day taking the Overall Points trophy by 46 points.
