Woking Swimming Club’s Anna Maine has made Team England squad selection for the Commonwealth Games in Australia in April.
The 17-year-old backstroke specialist has swum impressively at county, regional and national meets over the past few years, including Great Britain representation at both the European and World Junior Championships.
She is current county record holder of the ladies’ and girls’ 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke as well as the girls’ 50m freestyle.
Swimming referee and officials’ trainer Christina Victor said the announcement was “fabulous news for Anna and Surrey swimming” and “well deserved for a very talented swimmer.”
County masters organiser Jim Boucher said it was “a fantastic achievement”, while Woking treasurer Julie Burvill said of her selection: “How cool is that?”
Maine, who joined Woking as an associate swimmer when she was six, won the Freedom Leisure Young Sports Personality at the Sport Woking Awards last year.
