And what a day it was! Around 180 swimmers took to the water with over 1000 splashes in individual events alone. This was a new Surrey Record even before Magnificent Mike Hodgson stooped to conquer with three British Records in the 50/100 Breast and the 100IM. Queen of World Masters, Jane Asher, went ever so close to a World Record with her 50 fly at the end of the a fantastic day of swimming held, as ever, in the greatest spirit. The best team of people in white in the country cracked the whips and we finished at 7:39pm, about one minute off the forecast end time. Many thanks to those in white and the Meet Volunteers, marshalled by Julie Burvill who takes the title of “Proudest Mum on Poolside” as daughter Hannah, back from the University of Iowa, swam a meet best time – blokes and girlies – 200m free in 1:58.46.

The results of the Victor Ludorum (Individual Points, 10 year age groups) are here and we salute those with the speed and stamina to hang on in for the trophies: victor ludorum results 2017 Although the sound system wasn’t great, in fact it was awful, I hope we all spotted 103 year old John Harrison in the spectators. John wanted to come and see us on Saturday and beside me he roared Mike Hodgson to his 100m Breast British Record.
The last few years have seen the focus on Team Points transform from a geeks’ drudge counting points into a red-hot rivalry as all clubs go for glory in the relays. It was always going to be close between the two G’s – Godalming and Guildford – after last year’s epic battle. Guildford blasted the Mens’ events but were undone by a master class in press-ganging by Denise Humphries who mobilised a fine-lookin’ fine-swimmin’ posse of ladies who pipped Guildford to retain the Ladies Points trophy by a mere 19 points. “Next year will be different”…..they both are saying! The press-ganging ran to the relays too and Godalming were only shaded by three points. The overall trophy was Guildford’s even if British Record holder David Bryant nipped off to the airport mid session. Results files for the team points are here:
If you need Hytek files for club databases, they are ready and I will send out as requested.
Once again, we had a blast and I look forward to seeing you all next year at the latest. Have a great summer.
All the best
Jim Boucher
