{"id":9788,"date":"2023-06-17T17:46:58","date_gmt":"2023-06-17T16:46:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/surreyswimming.org\/?p=9788"},"modified":"2025-11-25T11:50:23","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T11:50:23","slug":"jules-burvill-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/surreyswimming.org\/?p=9788","title":{"rendered":"Jules Burvill Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Well done to Oscar Dyer, of Elmbridge Phoenix Swimming Club, for being the inaugural winner of the Jules Burvill Award.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Oscar was among 34 talented swimmers to be selected onto the county development programme last year and took part in a string of camps during the 2022-23 season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The award is presented to one of the athletes for engaging with the programme, developing as a swimmer and progressing their knowledge of the sport. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9747 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/surreyswimming.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/OscarDyer2-271x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/surreyswimming.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/OscarDyer2-271x300.jpg 271w, https:\/\/surreyswimming.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/OscarDyer2.jpg 485w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/>County coach Stuart McCrea said that the selectors \u2013 him, the other camp coaches and team manager \u2013 had a tough time deciding who should receive the prize first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">He said: \u201cWe found ourselves in a good but difficult situation. We had a number of swimmers we could have presented the award to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cBut Oscar\u2019s engagement during the sessions, both with his peers and the coaching team, and his general enthusiasm and politeness throughout the camps helped put him a touch above.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Stuart, who is now halfway through his two-year stint as county coach, said the supporting skills coaches had been &#8220;excellent&#8221; across all the camps and had been thoroughly engaged in their content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">He said: \u201cThe nature of working alongside a group of different coaches from different backgrounds will encourage the sharing of ideas and different practices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cAlthough they come armed with an extensive skill set, these camps are as much about coach development as well as swimmer development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cThe athletes have different strengths and weaknesses.
