{"id":4584,"date":"2018-09-25T12:57:20","date_gmt":"2018-09-25T11:57:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/surreyswimming.org\/?p=4584"},"modified":"2022-09-01T08:33:42","modified_gmt":"2022-09-01T07:33:42","slug":"swimmers-team-building-event-ahead-of-national-county-team-champs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/surreyswimming.org\/?p=4584","title":{"rendered":"Swimmers&#8217; team-building session ahead of National County Team Championships 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Ahead of this year\u2019s National County Team Championships, county coach David Vine and team manager Julie Burvill report on a squad team-building session at Wild Wood Adventure in Guildford.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">This was the first time we have undertaken an outdoor team-building event and fun was had by all. The &#8216;Wild Trials&#8217; session was designed for the swimmers to get to know one another and build confidence in being together before the major national event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4591 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/surreyswimming.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/WildWood2-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/surreyswimming.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/WildWood2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/surreyswimming.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/WildWood2-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/>Having woken to heavy rain in the morning, it looked as though the weather might dampen spirits somewhat. But a little rain wasn&#8217;t going to put the Surrey team off. Indeed, not only did they bring the sun out but they also brought nerves of steel with them for the trials.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><em><strong>It was an awesome experience and the right thing to do. The swimmers loved it and got to know one another so much better<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Over the course of two hours the swimmers put themselves through a series of challenges, including getting four harnessed members of your team over high-rise crate stacking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Alex Armstrong, Ben Rowett, Charlie Trotman and Matthew Ferguson won the challenge, going 10 crates high, with all four managing to stand on top before it all came crashing down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The Gladiator Challenge saw all the swimmers scale a piece of high-rise apparatus under timed conditions. Their competitive nature came to the surface and from the first team, Kiera Heney and Alex Armstrong were fastest to the top.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4592 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/surreyswimming.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/WildWood1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/surreyswimming.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/WildWood1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/surreyswimming.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/WildWood1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/surreyswimming.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/WildWood1-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>In the second team, not to be outdone, were Kirstie Flynn and Paige Coombs. Their forfeit for being fastest was that they had to scale it again \u2013 only this time blindfolded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The zip-line proved popular as the teams took it in turns to race down in pairs. This was followed by putting all your trust and judgement into a &#8216;leap of faith&#8217; \u2013 stepping off a 15m platform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Alicia Peinado, one of the youngest members, volunteered to go first. No pressure, team, as everyone else had to follow.
